Nine Major Stars Fail to Make the Weekend Cut at the Open de España

Several of the DP World Tour’s biggest names missed the cut at the Open de Espana at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, with Patrick Reed among those heading home early and Eugenio Chacarra still in contention for the national title.

The tournament carries a major prize, places in the season-ending play-offs and a PGA Tour card for 2027, so the early exits matter. Here are the notable names who missed the cut.

Patrick Reed (+2)

Patrick Reed was looking to extend his lead over Rory McIlroy in the Race To Dubai standings, but missing the cut means he could now lose top spot. Chacarra, playing with a broken toe, is challenging for the Spanish Open in his home country. Only a victory will be enough for him to overtake Reed, but a second or third-place finish would be enough to move him past McIlroy into second.

Reed is recovering from the injury that forced him out of the BMW PGA Championship, and he has now gone another week without earning points. He improved to a level-par 71 on Friday, but his opening 73 on Thursday cost him, and he missed the weekend by a single stroke.

Justin Rose (+2)

Justin Rose finished T18 at the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour, but his return to Europe has not gone to plan. He finished T51 at the BMW PGA Championship and then missed the third-round cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He shot 72-72 in Madrid to finish two over and missed the weekend by just one shot, making it back-to-back missed cuts for the Englishman.

Jayden Schaper (+2)

Jayden Schaper has cooled after a strong start to the season, when he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Mauritius Open in consecutive tournaments. He has now missed his second cut in a row and his third in four starts. A T36 at Wentworth has been his only recent result of note. He entered the week seventh in the Race To Dubai, but he shot 73-71 and also missed the weekend.

Bubba Watson (+3)

Bubba Watson’s debut in the tournament did not go as planned. He opened with a four-over 75 on Thursday, which left him with a steep climb. The two-time Masters champion improved to a one-under 70 on Friday, but he finished a couple of shots short of the cut. Watson also missed the cut the previous week at the Dunhill Links.

Tom McKibbin (+3)

Tom McKibbin had been in good form, finishing T6 at the British Masters and T5 at the Irish Open in successive weeks. That form has now deserted him. The Northern Irishman has missed the cut in his last two events, after also failing to make the weekend at Wentworth.

Nicolai Hojgaard (+4)

Nicolai Hojgaard made a hole-in-one on the third hole on Friday, but it was not enough to save his round or his form. He has now missed a fourth consecutive cut on the DP World Tour. He was wayward during his opening 74, and he could not break par on Friday, finishing four over. Hojgaard started the week 100th in the Race To Dubai standings, so he faces a huge task to reach the season-ending play-offs.

Adrian Meronk (+5)

Adrian Meronk won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last week, and he struggled in Spain as a result. He opened with a 72, but a 75 on Friday sealed a missed cut just a week after his victory.

Tyrrell Hatton (+6)

Jon Rahm has made headlines by quitting LIV Golf, and Hatton, his Legion XIII teammate, may follow him. For now, Hatton is focused on the DP World Tour, but his week in Spain went poorly. He opened with a 76 on Thursday, which did the damage, and he was well short of the cut mark despite a much better 72 on Friday. It is his second straight missed cut.

Andy Sullivan (+9)

Former Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan was ninth in the Race To Dubai before heading to Spain, despite withdrawing from the French Open on his previous start. He made a poor start on his return, opening with a 78. His 73 on Friday offered a slight improvement but was not enough to reach the weekend.
